My Conventional Tour Poster

Reflection

I made a collage of photos on google slides, showing the images I found as the result of searching pop. I decide the best choice was to show the variety of pop tor posters. As you can see they all have colour on them, but some have darker colours, rather than what you would classically think (aka, bright colours), like Beyonce, Olivia Rodrigo, and Taylor Swift. when you think of pop, you normally think of bright colour, but with these artists, they are popular enough to be able to change the game.

Reflection

This tour poster was actually very difficult to do. I first researched pop tour posters, are there was some variety, however for the most part it was bright colours and bold font. So I tried to encode both of these things.

The background was a real struggle, deciding if I wanted the colours pink or blue. I’m glad I did the blue, as it broke up the blocky colours a bit, but I’m regretful of the background choice. In future I would rather have a realistic background rather than a blocky edited background such as this.

The tour dates were also hard to get the placement correct, but in the end I like how they came out. I especially like the title for the “stars tour”, I think it came of cute and girly, which was the intention.

My Magazine Front Page Swede

Reflection

I remade a front cover of a magazine, DTP (desktop production), of a already existing magazine. Trying to make this as accurate as possible. This proved to be pretty difficult even down to get a font that matched. There where many challenges within this magazine, such as dark spots of the actual image that I was using, forcing me to play around with the colour of the fonts.

Where I think I went wrong:

  • I would definitely say that the fonts was a massive problem for me. Getting the text to look like the original was so difficult, which is surprising, as it’s a very simple font.
  • Getting the proportions correct was really difficult. I couldn’t get some colours of the text exact, as some spots on this image, were darker/lighter than the original, meaning I had to take some creative liberties with it.
  • My spacing with the text wasn’t perfect

What went well:

  • The pictures at the top where a perfect match, the boarder is the same.
  • although it was also a con, I think that taking creative liberties with the text actually looks good.
  • i got the top text +logo pretty much exact.

On the whole, it doesn’t look completely horrible, especially for my first time. But these things above are definitely things I need to keep in mind for future reference.

It’s important to be able to use this software properly, and to be able to efficiently make a music magazine worthy of the public eye. So by using the videos bellow, I can further my skills with InDesign, using them to focus on what I struggled in.

My Image, Which Uses Conventional Mise-En-Scene To Represent A Genre Of Music

Made with Padlet

Reflection

In Padlet, me and my group made a poster of different things in pop. In our group, we all decided that this represents pop for us. We have people like, Beyoncé, Charlie xcx, the Weeknd, Rihanna etc. These individuals are some of the main faces of pop.

In our group, I got one of Rihanna’s magazine covers, as I feel like that’s when pop was the best. The magazine is almost very crowded, making it very enticing to a younger audience, like teenage girls. With fun colours, a seemingly young colour palette. We also had some colour palettes on there, the pop indestructible uses really bright fun colours, again to draw in a younger audience.

Focusing in on Britney Spears, she has some of the most iconic outfits in pop history, using bright colours and sparkle, to tie into her music. Like her outfit at the VMAs in 2009, where she was wearing bright colours, with a snake around her arms. This signifies just how out there pop is.

For my magazine, I would 100% use colours that symbolise darkness, such as deep reds, blacks, deep blues, purples, greens ect. Using makeup as a big part of this as well, using big dramatic colours, accessories as well, making it all very early 2000s.

Audience Feedback

The audience decided the conventions of our pop star, wrote it down, and stuck it on our model. As you can see, our model portrayed all the conventions you would typically want to see from a pop artist. We encoded a disco ball, and we gave our model a sequin jacket, the audience fed back, ‘sparkly’ which makes people connect, sparkle to pop, for a wider audience.

Main Six Images

In our group, we used many different poses, that best represented the fun and playful side of pop. We encoded media language, by using different shades of pink, and sparkles as it would be the most appealing to a teenage audience. We used a disco ball to signify the fun of pop music.

My Chosen Image

This is my chosen image, because it represents all the conventions you would expect to see in pop. The use of mise-en-scene is very important, the pose is very fun, as she’s holding the disco ball like a basketball. The media language with the costume, ties in with this. The colours are bright and exciting, the mix of materials (feathers, sequins, ect.) The body language is relaxed, but still playful, giving a sense of the kind of music within the pop genre.

Focus forward

In my magazine, I would want to encode many conventions that relate to the kind of music. Using mise-en-scene to represent the genre. The costume, camera angel, props are all important. This also ties in with media language.

Textual Analysis Of A Tour Poster

Reflection

I made a textual analysis, of the media language on the blink 182 tour poster. On this poster, I decoded/deconstructed the mise-en-scene of the poster, the mise-en-scene being: colours, fonts, lighting ext.  Colours have connotations, and artist use those to present their ideas. Artists use fonts, colours and body language to convey the meaning behind a narrative.

On this poster, yellow signifies danger, giving the audience imagery of yellow police tape, especially with the black background. The poster is very dull-coloured, but the pop of yellow is very attractive to the eyes, really making the audience look. All of this can convey a narrative. For example, their relaxed body language, whilst they’re wearing hazmat suits, whilst seemingly at a crime scene, signifies danger and possibly they are the danger

In my magazine, I would like to use this method. Having a very dull coloured poster, hitting the audience with a pop of colour. Maybe having an all black and white cover, then having a bold colour standing out, like a piece of clothing and the title of the magazine.
